They're still chugging along. They don't add much battery drain to the Deck if any compared to using the built-in screen. In terms of nose rests, I ended up using an arc of 3M double-sided foam tape curved into the inside of the metal parts of the nose rests, with a generous strip of craft felt tucked inside the tape. The felt is soft against my nose and the tape adds some nice padding, so the combo is very comfortable and is usable for hours. The tape sticks to both the rests and the felt really well. At some point, I'll put in fresh tape and felt, but haven't needed to yet. Both the tape and felt are available on Amazon.I'm also using a pair of super-cheapie plastic "wallet reading glasses" that have 2.5 magnification and clip onto the nose. They're small and flat enough that they slip between the Airs and my eyes no problem, and can clip onto the felt so I don't even feel them. They don't actually magnify anything, but they do make small text quite a bit clearer and make things easier for my eyes overall. They also add a layer of protection for the Airs' optics, and cling to the felt well enough that I just leave them on the Airs when I fold up the Airs and put them in their case. I'll probably upgrade to similar ThinOptics glasses with real glass lenses at some point, but for now the cheapies work fine, and do make a positive difference.I usually put everything away and tuck the custom cable into the little case under the Airs, so coiling it up and uncoiling it regularly is tweaking it out a little, and I'm planning to buy a replacement cable, just in case it dies. Apparently Rokid's cable for their similar AR glasses is compatible?Original review:I bought the Xreal Airs mostly to watch movies in bed, connected to a Steam Deck. They work really well for that, once you get them adjusted, tweaked, and set up. I think of them as a bright, low-energy-usage $400 "movie projector" that also happen to be light, portable AR glasses.I haven't tried any of the AR features and did not buy the HDMI / Apple adapter or Beam.To do the initial setup of the glasses, I first connected them to a USB-C port on the back of my M1 Mac Mini, and used the Chrome browser to go to the Xreal web site's firmware update page. It made updating both the MCU and DP firmware quick and simple, basically just click on the two update buttons on the web page, and let it do its thing. The special USB-C cable that comes with the glasses is pretty short, so hooking them up to the Mini that was inside a desk cubbyhole was awkward, but worked fine for the few minutes needed. The USB-C connector on the end of the cable was a very tight fit in the Mini's port. Anyone wanting to regularly use these with a desktop computer will probably want to get some sort of USB-C USB-4 extension cable or coupler and regular cable. The included cable is a reasonable length for connecting to a Steam Deck or laptop that is close to you.The 1080p displays are quite bright and sharp, and the colors look accurate. I use a 40 inch TCL "TV" for my Mini's monitor which is about 2 1/2 feet from my eyes, and when sitting at my desk, the glasses' displays appeared to take up roughly half of my field of view compared to the 40" TV, about half as wide and half as tall. So, the displays appear to be pretty big, but not enormous. They're a good size for watching movies in full-screen mode. If I was to use them for computer tasks, I'd want them to be both larger in apparent size and to be 4K resolution, but they can be used with a computer in a pinch. Even small text is crisp and clear on them. The left arm of the glasses gets fairly warm during use. The glasses otherwise stay cool. The built-in speakers are pretty good, a lot better than nothing, but connecting wired or Bluetooth earbuds or compact headphones (such as the goofy-looking but very good and inexpensive "bedphones" Koss KSC75's) to the Deck is much better for movies.Getting the glasses to sit perfectly on your nose and ears is the trickiest part. The built-in ability to adjust each of the arms of the glasses up or down a click is very useful if your ears are uneven (most are). The three sets of included nose rests are somewhat less useful. You need to use the exact right nose rest to get the height of the glasses' displays to center between the frames so that the displays aren't partially blocked by the frames. I'm somewhere between the medium and tall nose rests, and the squishy pads on the rests are very uncomfortable with the weight they carry on my nose. So, time to experiment. I thought at first that I could add small foam or felt pads to the medium rests' squisy pads, but nothing sticks to the squishy pads. However, the squishy pads can be carefully removed from the metal parts of the rests, by pulling them slowly through a small slot in one corner of the rests' squares that hold the pads in place. Then felt or foam pads can be stuck directly to the metal parts of the rests, and replace the sticky pads. I found that using the felt floor protectors that you'd normally stick on the bottom of chair feet worked pretty well to start. They stuck to the metal parts of the rests pretty well, and could be cut to cover the entire rests plus more. I then added thin foam tape inside of the felt pads since the felt was a little too firm and scratchy. This setup is much more comfy than the squishy pads, distributes the weight of the glasses better, and can be tweaked to get the height just right. Of course, it looks ugly, but for travel I can always switch back to the squishy pads.My vision isn't perfect, but I don't want to spend hundreds to get prescription lenses for the Airs. I think that perhaps a pair of cheap, compact "reader" glasses tucked inside the Airs might do the trick, and am experimenting with both some ThinOptics and generic plastic readers that clip on the nose.To watch movies on the Deck involves a couple of things. First, the version of Firefox installed on the Deck is fairly out of date, and can be added to Gaming mode, but doesn't work well there. But you can go into Desktop mode, use Discovery to search for Firefox and install (the Flatpack version of) it, which is up to date and works well in Desktop mode. Log into Amazon, Apple, etc. in Firefox and now you can watch movies full-screen. To get Firefox to show up on the glasses in native 1080p resolution, in Desktop mode, you need to go into System Settings -> Display and Monitor, select the Airs, set them to be both Enabled and Primary, and then optionally set the built-in display to not be Enabled (so it isn't still on while you're using the Airs), click on Accept, then click that you want to keep the current settings.Overall, yes, these take some futzing to get them to work, but they work quite well when they're set up just right. Totally an impulse buy. I thought they weren't charging at first.Oh okay they just power through the device you connect to the custom usb-c cable(normal usb-c cables don't work so DON'T LOSE IT)-Device One: Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5gOkay powered up. Ah it's just mirroring my phone. That's kinda lame cuz I want to touch my phone so looking down at it while looking up isn't really useful.Oh okay, you can download the nebula app and have an AR experience. This app is kinda cool but it's really annoying having to sign into things on it. Like your gmail and all the apps you have need to be signed into through it. I wish it just picked up a handshake from the phones apps. I use a pw manager so I can't just type in the same pw for everything lol. But it's fun to surf the web a little but it does feel more like a gimmick than anything. If they develop this experience and make it smoother I can see it being a much bigger draw for consumers.-OH OKAY - Samsung Dex is a completely DIFFERENT experience. If you were in a pinch and had to use your phone to get work done, I could totally see this being an option. Dex is a virtual desktop-docking station thing. A few things you'd have to do to get the ultimate phone setup: 1.) a usb-c splitter that can charge the phone while you use these glasses (it's power hungry) 2.) bluetooth mouse and keyboard. That's really all you'd need! If you wanted to game on your phone add a wireless controller.-Now, I would say this phone+dex+dockingstuff would mostly be useful for those on the road a lot or that just like using their phone versus a laptop. If you're looking to upgrade a laptop experience keep reading ;)--Device Two: Ryzen 7 Lenovo Thinkpad 13"We can just get this one out of the way. ChromeOS is not yet supported and doesn't have a Nebula app(android Play Store says it's not available for the device). That means that you are limited to extending a second display to the glasses or you can mirror the laptop's screen to the glasses. That's actually what I'm doing right now to write this(mirroring). It's like having a much bigger screen than the 13" on this chromebook. The chromebook does have a good range of resolutions and since I'm just mirroring the screen from the native OS, there is a decent screen brightness and resolution capability. When using the nebula app for virtual desktops, you are limited to lower resolutions*--Device Three: Macbook Pro 15" 2019 intel i9This came with its own little oddities. It feels like a complete device, but with a few rough edges.Similar to the S21 Ultra experience, you need an app to unlock the potential. Instead of the android nebula interface or samsung dex, macos nebula offers a virtual desktop option.I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I was getting a blank screen when trying to enable this. Finally found I had to go to the menu for dock settings in the mac and enable "Displays have separate spaces". Once I set that and re-connected my glasses. There were my 3 virtual desktops!!!-But I couldn't figure out where the menu bar icon was to control the "centering" of the displays or making them bigger/smaller or closer or farther away....Turns out I use a world clock at work, with 5 or 6 clocks strewn across the top of my menu bar. This was pushing the nebula app icon out of view. Why mac OS doesn't stack them is beyond me lol but it was more pebkac than anything.-As noted above, the virtual displays have less customizable resolution and all look a little lower than high definition. Maybe software updates can fix that? I'm not sure where the horsepower is completely coming from for these displays. I'm assuming when you're IN the nebula app, the glasses are doing more of the work so maybe the glasses hardware is more limiting in this regard.-I DID work strictly through these glasses for a total of 2.5 hours today from the couch and didn't get motion sick or get a headache. I'm very very sensitive to motion sickness so that was surprising lol. I have a relatively large dome, and the glasses didn't pinch or anything. I'm currently wearing the glasses with over the ear Soundcore Q20's and I can now feel the back of the glasses pinching as I've been typing this for far too long...That said, the glasses don't have a focus knob or anything so I would sometimes feel like the screens were a little blurry. I have lasik 20/20 vision so I know it's NOT my eyes. Moving them around on the bridge of my nose would help but yea, the slightly less than HD resolution was def a factor. Also the virtual screens jitter quite a bit. Even without moving my head, the screens would jitter like I had parkinsons. Again though, my eyes really adjusted to it well. Maybe the jitter as I turned to look across desktops prevented me from getting motion sick.-Really, these are a solid 8/10 in terms of being able to use for a days work. They easily work better than fussy external portable monitors.I have not tried them on Windows yet, my bath tub laptop doesn't have a USB-C port lmao.-This is "newer" tech, but there is an xreal community forum and they do label their MacOS and Windows apps as Beta so you know they're still working on perfecting them.I'm honestly quite excited to see how things improve, slowly but surely (writing good code doesn't happen overnight!)-I often work from my mom's house off my 15" macbook pro 2019 i9 and this will definitely be coming with!---Conclusion: If you're looking for fun tech to play with and have some expendable cash, I say go for it. I'm glad I took the leap.If you're looking for a portable virtual desktop for work, I would definitely say it's a buy over external monitors! These are SO much more portable! Just know they do eat up battery life when the source is not plugged in.Oh and the speakers are ridiculous but what do you expect? They'll work for solo movie watching but on a plane your neighbor will hear and not appreciate.Connect bluetooth earbuds and you'll be much happier. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 8, 2023 Verified Purchase As far as quality goes, the packaging is okay, the product vastly over priced and incompatible with most devices, including iPhone, if you wish to use earphones. When I say most, I mean about 3 phones are supported, all high end expensive ones to boot. The field of view is very limited, unless you have space for a 103 inch screen infront of you, it will not display 103 inch screen, so forget using these on planes and transport etc.The privacy policy is extremely invasive and you are not able to even switch the device on without signing away your browser data and all other personal information. So ever video you watch, they will collect your data. Product support is also non existent.I used to have an old pair of glasses like this back in the 90s, and they were better. They really were. You are also only able to freeze the position of the screen, when using their absolutely terrible app ui, and not when mirroring a phone.I've faced nothing but opposition when attempting to return these and from my communications with the seller, doubt if I ever manage to send them back, would not find some issue, to prevent refunding me.I'm not the sort of person to give poor reviews, but I do not want others to make the same mistake I have, and purchase this product. It is truly a waste of time and money.
