Description: MUST READ Four GI Machine Gunners Left Behind in Dark, Surround and Capture 27 Reluctant German Soldiers Although this is a 1970s/80s reprint of an original photo, this identified soldier has an AMAZING STORY as to how he received his Bronze Star Oak Leaf Cluster for heroism from Lt. Col. Everett W. Duvell (pictured). PFC Kenneth M. Culbertson, a machine gunner with the 180th Regt., 45th Infantry Division, helped capture a platoon of German soldiers near Peyrolles, France in August of 1944. A national story by the Associated Press wrote of how a unit of 4 machine gunners, that never received the orders to "straighten out the line and pull in", were armed with just 1 machine gun but still able to capture 27 German "kamerads" (albeit mistakenly). This photo shows PFC Culbertson receiving his medal while on the front line of Lt. Gen. Jacob L. Devers' 6th Army Group (not pictured). I will include a Xerox copy of the 1944 newspaper article I found regarding this capture. Please message me if you have any questions.
