The original Ruptured Duck was a cloth patch depicting an eagle inside a wreath. It was worn on uniforms above the right breast pocket by honorably discharged WWII veterans. The patch looked more like a duck than an eagle, and since they were heading home, the popular saying at the time was "They took off like a ruptured duck". This coined the nickname for the patch and the lapel pins which came quickly after. It was issued to service personnel who were about to leave or left the military with an Honorable Discharge. It allowed them to continue to wear their uniform for up to thirty days after they were discharged without problems with the Military Police thinking they were AWOL while in long transits on their way home
