Description: This is a very nice ORIGINAL WWII JAPANESE NAVY NAVAL OFFICERS KATANA SAMURAI SWORD WITH FAMILY ANCESTRAL BLADE. The sword is in good condition and was used during WWII. This sword was captured on Saipan by Capt. George Azud when he was in the Second Marine Division there durning WWII. It is a early example with the shark-skin covered saya (scabbard ) and has excellent detail in all the sword fittings including the ( monkey paw ) loop end at the top of the Tsuka ( handle grip) for holding the tassel. The tassel was removed during combat and is not on the sword. The Japanese Naval Officer that carried the sword was able to have a family ancestral blade mounted in his WWII sword furniture as was allowed early in the pre-war period. The blade in this sword has a very dark Tang with 2 punched holes in it. It is unsigned. The style and shape of the blade is of the old sword period (Koyto) however the temper line (Hamon) indicates a possible Shinto period manufacture. The temper line resembles a Shark-tooth pattern and is quite impressive. The blade has 2 very tiny visible nicks in the edge probably from ancient use before being remounted in the present furniture but could have happened during WWII as this was a battlefield pick up durning the battle for Saipan. The sword blade is razor sharp. The Saya ( scabbard ) has some marks in the shark-skin cover and there is one spot that has a slight separation that looks like a crack in the Saya ( scabbard ) but is only in shark-skin covering and does not go into the wood underneath ( see magnified photos ). The fittings are nice and one of the Menuki is brighter than the other. The wrap on the handle is nice and tight. The sword fits nicely in the scabbard. The sword measures in the scabbard approx. 38 1/2 inches or 98 cm. long. The blade is approximately. 30 inches or 76 cm. long from Tang to point. The blade cutting edge is approx. 23 1/2 inches or 58.5 cm. from the Habaki to the point. This sword was purchased from Capt. George Azuds wife after his passing many years ago. I have a photo of Capt. George Azud during the battle of Saipan (not holding the sword) that I will send a copy of in a e-bay message to the buyer.See photos as they are part of the description.
