Description: WW2 USAAF MSgt Paper Lot w/1942 LOA Signed by Future Brig General Aubrey Hornsby. A very interesting lot here: it's the typical paper accumulation of a US Army Air Corps soldier--a "Lifer"--whose career began well before WW2, but continued through it. The Master Sergeant's career really isn't the focal point of this lot...it's certainly an interesting browse, and I certainly enjoyed researching the officers who signed his paper work. One such piece was a Letter of Appreciation signed then-Colonel A. Hornsby. I found that Colonel Hornsby went on to become a Brigadier General who, early in his aviation career, participated with Billy Mitchell in the experimental bombing of German capital ships, thereby proving the obsolescence of capital ships. In 1940, he took command of the building of Gunter Field in Alabama and over time helped to pioneer aircraft maintenance protocols that were instrumental in the War effort (I included a close up of a letter with the Gunter Field letterhead for context). Later he commanded the 308th Bombardment Wing and was awarded the DSM in 1946 for his accomplishments. Notes on the listing photos: the opening shots show the paperwork fanned out; pic #3 shows the signed 1942 LOA next to another letter addressed to the MSgt dtd 1943 with the Gunter Field letterhead, which shows that the recipient was stationed at the field during Colonel Hornsby's tenure (see the tighter view that letter in pic #8). Pic #5 shows the LOA next to its carbon and pic #6 shows a closeup on Col. Hornsby's signature (pic #7 is a close up of the carbon). Colonel Hornsby's signature is pretty clear...there seems to be a check mark made on the signature...I don't know if the signature was signed over the checkmark, or if the checkmark was made after the letter was signed. The envelope in which the paper was stowed is also included (it shows lots of wear...see pics #9-10). Check the listing pics for content/condition specifics and feel free to ask any questions you may have. Offered from a smoking-free home. Please, only US bidders on this lot or international bidders with a US-based, eBay-linked shipping address (I do not directly ship overseas). Shipping is 10.60 for a USPS Flat Rate Padded Envelope.
