Description: AUSTRALIAN MODEL 1907-1, Dated February 1944 issuance (WW2) and also bears 1951 dates on both the grips and the spine of the hilt BACKGROUND The Lithgow Pattern 1907 bayonet, A10, was introduced in 1915, and is the same as the British made version except for the markings and type of wood used for the grips. These may be found marked "LITHGOW", "MA" or “OA" Manufacture, inspection and proof marks on the ricasso of the Lithgow manufactured Patt. '07 bayonets were changed during the course of manufacture. Up to 1920, the year was stamped in full (e.g. 1916) but from 1920, the month was included (e.g. 12'20; some may have the year in full, e.g. 1 1922). These bayonets are marked "LITHGOW" The first appearance of "MA" and the pattern designation ("MA" over "1907" and "I"), which is typical of 2nd World War production, seems to have been about 1927. About 1927, bayonet production ceased and was recommenced late in 1940. Ricasso markings from 1940 are different, including the inspector's marks. The bayonet shop was transferred from Lithgow to Orange in• July 1942. The wood room, which made up rifle furniture as well as bayonet grips, was removed from Lithgow to the Slazenger Sports goods factory in Sydney in 1941; and the mark "SLAZ" on the grips indicates manufacture there. The wood room was not returned to Lithgow until 1967. MARKINGS Blade Left side bears the original blade forging company Lithgow (MA) and the 1907-1 Designator indicating post 1927 finishing and issuance. The Issue date of February 1944 is stamped as well. The right side ricasso bears the OA mark, which indicates that the bayonet was finished and issued by Orange Arsenal, also in Australia. GRIPS Left grip bears a faint “Slaz 51” stamp, meaning the grips were also made in Australia at a sub supplier for Orange Arsenal, and were issued (surely replacements after the war) Scabbard: Mangrovite marked Scabbard with Lithgow (MA) marked Locket and Chape CONDITION: Good.
