Description: Buy new directly from the label: Siegfried Mauser (born 1954), German musician, author and educator is one of the most interesting figures on the European music scene. Having made his name by playing the avant-garde and a wide variety of 20th-century composers, he unexpectedly (re)turned to the “classical” genre with this large-scale recording of Mozart’s 18 piano sonatas on 5 CDs with a sixth CD added of single- movement works which he thought relevant to the understanding of the composer’s style and intention. Known for his interpretations of Mahler, Hindemith and Feldman all the way to Wolfgang Rihm, Hans Otte, P. M. Hamel and K. A. Hartmann as well as Wilhelm Killmayer among many others, his recent dedication to Mozart came as a surprise to most. During the decade he served as the president of the Bavarian State Academy, he had tirelessly worked to bring music education into the present without however neglecting its past. Mauser’s book on the Beethoven sonatas had come to be known as a relevant contribution, maybe the most relevant since Edwin Fischer’s efforts in the 1930s. Entirely unplanned but having fallen into place in a way that would seem like perfect organization, Mauser’s recent book on the Mozart sonatas went hand-in-hand with his election to the position of chancellor of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria; he has taken up his new duties on October 1st with the inauguration ceremony scheduled for October 16th, 2014. It is shedding light on Mauser’s mind to know that he had asked the German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk to give the speech on the occasion in Salzburg. Except for the first five short sonatas which were recorded in a more intimate setting (more keeping the character of a harpsichord or early fortepiano of Mozart’s day in mind), the collection was recorded at the concert hall of the Academy in Munich, a splendid space with perfect acoustics and two excellent instruments, a Hamburg Steinway D and a Bösendorfer Imperial, both of which were tuned and recorded to perfection. The sessions took place over a space of 2 ½ years— always after the Christmas/New Year’s recess and during the Northern summer holiday— to allow for adequate preparation in a life with a more than busy schedule.
