He retired as a colonel from the military in 1985 and began his second career in academia as a professor and a program coordinator with the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of Utah in that same year. He subsequently became the vice chairman of that department and the director of the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health before retiring as an emeritus professor in 2008. He and his wife, Lois, a pediatric recovery room nurse during her career, live in Salt Lake City. They have two children, Beth and Don, and two grandchildren, Ryan and Cameron.
