Description: Estate FindStars Over TexasBoot VaseWilliam WilhelmiDavid Starr ChapmanWayland Randolph We offer a 1980s era pottery boot vase sculpture crafted by the ceramic artists William “Bill” Wilhelmi, David Starr Chapman, and Wayland Randolph.The vase is a variation of the porcelain cowboy boots by Wilhelmi that were installed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Modeled as a cowboy boot, the vase has an applied handle. The lower boot portion is glazed brown with a matte finish while the upper portion of the boot is glazed in a glossy finish and decorated with the “stars over Texas” blue skies and white stars.The boot vase is hand inscribed on the base with Wilhelmi’s initials, Chapman’s star mark and Randolph’s initials.The boot vase measures 8 1/2” in length and 2 1/2” in width with a height of 7”. The upper opening measures 3 1/4” in diameter.As seen in the photographs, there are three flakes on the underside of the boot toe which cannot be seen when the boot is sitting upright. The ceramic Stars Over Texas cowboy boot vase is presented in very good vintage condition. David Starr Chapman, American (1958-2023)Raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, David would tell stories of spending his summers at his grandparents home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. In 1964 Elizabeth Taylor moved next door when Richard Burton was filming Night of the Iguana and she would make grilled cheese sandwiches for David and his brother. David later studied ceramics under Bill Wilhelmi in the 1970s and collaborated on many pieces with him. David’s artwork included ceramics, sculpture and silk screening. Many of his ceramics were signed with a five point star flanked by D and C.
