Taft,” reflecting on when the United States Senate famously irritated President George Washington: “I thank you for sending me the letter of Washington to Mr. McHenry. I had particularly in mind, in the letter that I wrote you, Washington’s anger at the failure of the Senate to act promptly in the confirmation of Indian Treaties, which he went with Secretary Knox to secure the confirmation of, by a personal visit to the Senate. Senator William Maclay documented the occasion within his diary. “I HAD PARTICULARLY IN MIND, IN THE LETTER THAT I WROTE YOU, WASHINGTON’S ANGER AT THE FAILURE OF THE SENATE TO ACT PROMPTLY IN THE CONFIRMATION OF INDIAN TREATIES, WHICH HE WENT WITH SECRETARY KNOX TO SECURE THE CONFIRMATION OF, BY A PERSONAL VISIT TO THE SENATE” Any correspondence from a U.S. President discussing the Father of the Nation is extremely rare and highly desirable.
