WILLIAM CREIGHTON JR. - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 05/16/1833 - HFSID 3466 WILLIAM CREIGHTON, JR William Creighton, Jr. sends an autograph letter passing on information that he has learned about William Harvey. Autograph Letter Signed: "W Creighton Jun", 1p, 8x10. Chillicothe, 1833 May 16. To Mrs. Mary Ann Carroll. In part: "In compliance with a request made by John M. Wise Esquire since my return I have been making diligent inquiry for William Harvey...in which you are interested...He is still living about twelve miles from this place. He was a Methodist preacher in Maryland...He is now about 70 years of age...." With integral address leaf and free frank in Creighton's hand. Democratic-Republican William Creighton, Jr. (1778-1851) was an early proponent of Ohio statehood and actively campaigned against Arthur St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory and a member of the Federalist Party. Upon Ohio achieving statehood, Creighton became Ohio's first Secretary of State (1803-1808). He represented Ohio in Congress from 1813-1817, 1827-1828 and 1829-1833. The Letter: Creased, folds. Vertical fold touches "ton" in Creighton. Tape stains at left edge, ½x¼-inch hole at right from removal of wax seal on leaf. Typed caption affixed above date.
