In his now-familiar analysis about the UFO entitled: Flying Saucers: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies (1959) Jung linked Cold War fears to the retelling of UFO stories. He identified the spread of UFO imagery as a “visionary rumor” when he claimed that “this kind of rumor is an emotional tension having its cause in a situation of collective distress or danger, or in a vital psychic need”. Jung held that the tales of UFO sightings were like rumors that had gone around the world, except that they differed from ordinary rumors because they were “expressed in the form of visions”. “It is closely akin to the collective visions of, say crusaders during the siege of Jerusalem, the followers of the Pope at Fatima, Portugal, etc”. As a result, Flying Saucer cults have been nourished in great part by the Cold War. The Heaven’s Gate cult group was founded and led by Marshall Herff Applewhite and Bonnie Lu Nettles. They preached an eclectic philosophy that included Theosophy, occultism, Christian beliefs, UFOlogy, and environmental apocalypticism. The group was in existence from 1974 to 1997. Over the two-plus decades, approximately 150 people were part of the group, most for short periods. Thirty-eight members participated with their leader in a collective suicide in 1997. Of those, eight had been in the group only a few years, having joined sometime in the 1990s; the remaining 30 were long-term members, having been recruited in 1975 or 1976. On March 26, 1997, San Diego police found the 39 bodies of Applewhite and his follower's death. Police were alerted by a man who had left the group a month earlier. He had been alerted by a packet sent to him and other former members by the group. These sendings have instructions on how to maintain the Web site and assist in a media campaign. This book is an authentic reproduction of the original Heaven’s Gate cult FBI File and newspaper articles related to him. The FBI files provided a fascinating look into all kinds of people. Some files were never found and for others, massive amounts of paperwork were kept by the Bureau. These files are an invaluable tool for the study of social movements.
