Description: Wet Sourdough Starter Made From Pinecone Yeast Comes With Jar This starter is about 3 months old and made from yeast harvested from local Utah pine cones. ( Yes baby pinecones are loaded with yeast lol) I have been baking bread like crazy since it matured and it currently has the smell of ripe bananas. QUICK UPDATE! The starter no longer smells like ripe bananas. It has taken on a more alcohol yeasty scent as I recently switched to feeding it with whole wheat flour instead of white. (You can feed it with whatever you want still). Mostly because we got a good deal on some whole wheat recently so that's what we have. What you will receive. You will receive a wet starter in a small Ziploc bag inside a small glass jar. The baggie should help keep the starter from spilling in case of breakage. You may use the jar to begin feeding or I recommend using a larger jar. It can be any saved jam, pickle or mason jar you choose. If you want more starter, use a larger jar. Feeding. When I feed mine I use about 1 cup flour to 1/2 cup water however you can also do 1 to 1 depending on how wet or dry you want your starter. Your starter may arrive with a layer of liquid on top and smell faintly of alcohol. This is normal and just means your starter is hungry. I just stir in the liquid and feed. I suggest giving your starter a name, they do require care and maintenance. I have named mine Christmas because it was made from pinecone yeast and it's the gift that keeps on giving. You can keep your starter at room temperature or in the fridge. I keep mine at room temperature but I also use it multiple times a week. If you want to feed and bake less often, you can keep it in the fridge. When you feed your starter, it should rise and fall in a matter of a few hours. The longer between feedings the longer it will take to peak. Baking is best done when the starter is at its peak though you don't necessarily have to wait for it to peak. Just proof it longer if you use inactive starter. Also, you must discard about half of the starter with each feeding (not the first feeding after you get it but every feeding after discard some). I don't like to throw away discard so I use it in things like pancakes, fry bread and tortillas. If shipping seems a bit high that's because I'm including a jar which adds weight. I don't have the capability to ship dehydrated yeast, sorry. I hope you have as much fun baking as I have been. I decided I wanted to try and spread "Christmas" cheer all year. Happy Baking
