Buying songs was not an uncommon practice in the old days of country music. Webb Pierce owned a song-publishing company and, for some fifteen years beginning in the mid-1950s, was guaranteed to make a hit out of any song he chose to release. He was notorious for telling songwriters he'd record their material if they'd "give him half of it" (share songwriting credit with him in exchange for him recording the song.) With this deal, Pierce made money off the publishing, recording, and writing of the song. There is not a lot of concrete evidence to back up these deals, but here is the smoking gun, so to speak. This auction is for an original May 1, 1961 bank check signed by WEBB PIERCE. The check is on the account of W. A. and Marijohn Wilkin, but Pierce has scratched out their names at the top of the check. He has made the check out to WAYNE WALKER, in the amount of $100. On the memo line, Pierce has written: "Song Leaving on your mind 50%." He then signed his name on the signature line. What were the circumstances? We may never know, but in my mind, I picture Pierce, Walker, and Nashville songwriter Marijohn Wilkin in a room together, when Walker pitches his new song to Pierce. Pierce likes the tune, and asks Wilkin for a blank check. He crosses out Wilkin's name, fills out the check, and hands it to Walker. At Pierce's bank, the check is presented for payment. The teller crosses out the account number in pencil, and then writes Pierce's name at the bottom, and cashes the check for Walker. There is much research to do here, as Walker and Pierce are noted as co-writers on many songs. Walker, Pierce and Wilkin are also credited as writers for "All I Need Is You" and "Fallen Angel." A RARE! example of rock-solid proof of the true author of a classic country hit song. This song has gone down in history as having been written by Walker and Pierce, but now we know the real story. "Leavin' on Your Mind" was first recorded by Canadian singer Joyce Smith in 1962. Patsy Cline heard the song in her producer Owen Bradley's office one day, and immediately wanted the song for herself. Cline recorded the song later in 1962 and released it in 1963. It was her last single before she died in a plane crash in March of that year. This bank check has an ORIGINAL HAND-SIGNED AUTOGRAPH, NOT A COPY OR PREPRINTED SIGNATURE!
