Description: Vintage BYZANTINE MOLDED RED WAX ICON Christianity Art Plaque Greek MADONNA & JESUSStudio Handmade Artwork 4.75" long x 3.75" wide, and 5/8" deepA traditional Byzantine Greek Madonna with baby Jesus in her arms. There are 2 small angels- one on each side. Elaborately scrolled border. Initials MPOV are a Greek abbreviation for Meter Theou "Mother Of God"Initials ICXC are a Greek abbreviation for Jesus Christ Heavy and solid hand molded wax with a wax coated hanging cord securely embedded at top, ready to hang. Completely hand made in Germany, made circa early 1950s. Paper label on back from the Art Gallery Gift Shop that resold this in Norfolk, EnglandExcellent condition, wax is a deep ruby red and had gold gilding as highlighting, the top of the Madonna's head has a small amount of wear to the gold from being rubbed as a devotional over many years of worship. Wax has no nicks, chips, cracks. scratches, or damage of any kind. SUPERB SMALL DETAILING and very fine craftsmanship. Highly Collectible.This is a beautiful plaque, great for display and hanging on any wall.Nice for a collector. Very pretty and unique.This particular piece is quite rare.
