In the back of the book there is a Biographical Guide and a Notes section. William James Durant was an American historian, philosopher, teacher, and writer born on November 5, 1885, in N. Adams, Massachusetts. He is best known for his 11-volume work "The Story of Civilization", written in collaboration with his wife, Ariel Durant. His work "The Story of Philosophy", published in 1926, is described as a groundbreaking work that helped to popularize philosophy. Durant attended Columbia University in New York, where he received a doctorate in philosophy. Durant worked as a reporter for Arthur Brisbane's New York Evening Journal. He taught Latin, French, English, and Geometry at Seton Hall College. Durant joined some of the radical circles in New York and became the teacher of the Ferrer Modern School, an experiment in libertarian education. Durant also taught philosophy at Columbia University. In 1914, in a Presbyterian church in New York, he began lectures on history, literature, and philosophy, and continued twice weekly for 13 years. His first published book, "Philosophy and the Social Problem" was published in 1917. Durant retired from teaching in 1927. He and his wife gave 8 to 14 hours a day to "The Story of Civilization". To prepare to write the books, they visited Europe, Egypt, the Near East, India, China, Japan, Greece, Manchuria, Siberia, Russia, Poland, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and France. The first published book in the series was "Our Oriental Heritage", published in 1935. There were 10 more volumes to follow. Mrs. Durant's share in the preparation of the volumes became more and more substantial, and in the 7th book, her name was added to the title page. Durant and his wife were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1968. Durant received the Presidental Medal of Freedom in 1977. He also received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement in 1976.
