Smith to Governor Letcher and subsequently to the Congress of the State of Virginia, regarding the state of affairs at VMI at the beginning of the second year of the war. VMI had been closed in early 1861 as cadets were sent to train troops for the Confederate army in camps around Richmond. This document lists EVERY CADET enrolled for 1862 and records their home counties. Pay cadets, out of state cadets and state cadets are categorized. Many of the listed cadets fought at New Market in May of 1864 and many also served in the Confederate army. Among the many New Market cadets who are listed in the document: Felix T.
