Description: The Staunton Military Academy was founded in 1884 in Staunton, Virginia. It was a private all-male military school. The school was a highly regarded for its academic and military programs. Many notable American political and military leaders were graduates, including Sen. Barry Goldwater, the 1964 Republican presidential candidate, his son, Barry Goldwater, Jr. a member of Congress, the 1960's folk singer Phil Ochs, and John Dean, the White House Counsel who was a central figure in the Watergate scandal in the early 1970's. The Academy was founded by William H. Kable, a native of Virginia in a region that became a part of West Virginia as a result of the Civil War. Kable served the Confederacy during the war and was wounded during the Battle of Gettysburg. The Academy maintained a Junior ROTC program but ended the program after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which required programs receiving federal funding to racially integrate. Today, the eight buildings in which cadets lived and learned are now a part of the near by Mary Baldwin college campus.
