The book covers the history of the family and photos of interiors and antique paintings, furniture, and objects of interest. Great history or interior design reference. Measures 11.5 inches wide by 8.25 inches high. Spencer House, located in St. James's, London, is one of the city's most opulent and historically significant private residences. Built in 1756 for John, 1st Earl Spencer (an ancestor of Princess Diana), it was intended as a luxurious townhouse that showcased the wealth and status of the Spencer family. The architect James "Athenian" Stuart, known for his pioneering work in neoclassical design, was hired to create the interiors, marking Spencer House as one of the first examples of Greek Revival architecture in London. Spencer House quickly became a center of high society, renowned for its stunning interiors, which included intricate stucco work, gilded ceilings, and classical decor. The family lived there until the early 20th century, and while it remained in their ownership, it was rented out for various purposes, including use by private clubs and government offices during World War II. After suffering some deterioration, Spencer House underwent an extensive restoration in the 1980s, meticulously restoring its interiors to their former splendor. The work was funded by its current leaseholder, Lord Rothschild, who aimed to bring the building back to its original 18th-century glory. Today, Spencer House remains privately owned but is open to the public on certain days, allowing visitors to experience one of London’s finest examples of neoclassical architecture and a piece of the Spencer family’s legacy. Good vintage condition, light signs of handling. Please review photos for further condition assessment. Check out our other antique listings.
