Kyiv-4am replaced essentially the same Kyiv-4a, the changes are not significant. The actual added letter "M" to the name Kyiv-4aM indicates a "modernized" version of the camera. Kyiv-4AM is based on the development of the 30s, Contax-2. In the early 50s, the production facilities of the Carl Zeiss (Jena) plant and the actual documentation were transported as reparations to the USSR and, in particular, to the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv (as the country most affected in World War II).
