Detailed Description: This beautiful Native American carved black pottery bowl, crafted by Rose Cata Gonzales, is a wonderful example of classic Native American pottery design. It has a wonderful round and tapered form with a deeply carved and burnished motif depicting the Avanyu Serpent, eating its own tale. It will display beautifully wherever you may choose to use it. Brief History: Rose Cata Gonzales (b.1900 - 1989) Rose Gonzales has been credited as one of the early innovators of deeply carved pottery at the San Ildefonso Pueblo in the 1930s. Rose was originally born into the San Juan Pueblo and then married into the San Ildefonso Pueblo. Eventually learning her craft of making pottery from her mother-in-law Ramona Sanchez Gonzales. Roses parents died from the swine flu epidemic, leaving Rose and her sister, Pomasena, orphans. The girls survived by staying at the Santa Fe Indian School. A relative, Mary Cata adopted the girls and took care of them. Rose was a Sister of Pomasena Sanchez; Wife of Robert Gonzales Yazzie; Mother of Jose H. Rainbird Gonzales: Tse-Pe, Marie Gonzales Yazzie. Rose Gonzales was the great-aunt of Russell Sanchez and taught him the craft of making pottery as well. Over her lifetime she received numerous awards for her pottery and the distinctive designs and highly burnished surfaces she created on her pottery.
