Description: Vintage Red Wing 10 Gallon Crock with 6" Wing Circa - 1906 - 1930Almost perfect with character. Red Wing #10 crock with a bold 6" wing has no cracks or hairlines. There are two shallow chips on the lower front as shown in the photos. The crock has many manufacturing flaws and imperfections such as a glazed-over groove in the outer rim several lower side glazed-over fissures and glaze blemishes (as shown in photos) which were normal at the time. The company cited low-cost competitors as a reason for ceasing manufacturing and sales.Red Wing crocks started in Red Wing Minnesota in 1861 by Paul Rand. While the company has operated under several names, Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery was originally established in 1877. The name was changed again in 1906 to Red Wing Union Stoneware Co. at which time the red wing trademark was adopted. The company continued with this name until 1936 when the name was changed for the last time to Red Wing Potteries.These vintage glazed, hand-thrown, kiln-fired crocks were used prior to the introduction of refrigeration.
