Quan Yin take on both male and female forms, and their images are used to invite good feng shui into the home. The symbols on these lamps suggest happiness, fidelity, success, and good fortune. The Mallard ducks, rather than Mandarin ducks, depicted on the tiles on each point to a Japanese origin. There are no markings on these lamps that date them precisely, but the remnants of the wiring suggest the late 1930s or 1940s.
