Description: this is a beautiful impressionistic landscape vintage oil painting probably done in the 1970's by well-listed Rockport Art Asson. Artist Arnold Knauth (1918 - 2017) - on the rear of the frame, the artist has written in faint red ink "Westport, Conn." where the painting depicts an early winter scene of a small mountain range where there appears to be a small amount of snow at the base of the mountains as well as scattered on the hilly sections of the mountains - the hilly sections of the painting were painted with wonderfully-muted dark colors of green, brown & purple along with muted gray-white colors which represent the snow & ice already on the mountainsides - Arnold Knauf was born in 1918 in New York City & lived there & near Quissett Harbor - as a teenager, he attended the Middlesex School in Concord, MA - from there, Knauff attended Harvard Univ. & also studied at the National Academy of Design in Manhattan where he was tutored by artist Harrison Cady - thereafter, Knauff moved to Rockport, MA in 1939 in order to further his artistic style & established a studio there - in Rockport, Knauff studied with famed artists Aldro Hibbard & Emile Gruppe - ironically, Knauff's father was a noted economist & advised his son against becoming an artist as a profession - as it turns out, Knauff ultimately flourished as a Rockport artist creating Rockport type paintings depicting fishing trawlers & various harbors in the Cape Ann and Maine coastline areas - Knauff also became well-known for his creation of impressionistic landscapes such as this one of Westport, CT - this painting was done on sturdy masonite artist board & measures 18" x 12" sight size -it is in very good vintage condition - it comes with its original wooden frame which Knauth probably finished in muted off-white-gray paint which complements the colors in the painting beautifully - the frame measures 25" x 19" & is also in very good vintage condition -P.S. - this painting can be picked up at my home in Swanzey,NH to save on shipping cost -
