Description: Penobscot or Micmaq Nations Indian birch bark picture frame bound and trimmed with sweet grass.Tee-pee form.Circa 1920's; for the tourist trade. These were usually sold in the "Indian Tents" set up roadside along Route 1, from Kittery to Bar Harbor during the summer season. In very good condition, with glass .Made from woven sweet grass and birch bark. Bark back is slightly torn where photos have been slid in and out for years. Wire stand used to hold the frame up is intact. Measures approximately 5" tall x 4" wide at the base,Very nice example of this highly collectible hand made Indian tourist trade item. Disclaimer: I feel this item is more likely made by the Penobscot people than Micmac but I do not know for certain. Both nations people’s are native to Maine but the Penobscot have a larger presence historically, whereas the Micmac region included more of Maritime Canada. I have seen these frames associated with both nations however.I have not cleaned this item aside from a light dust off. Light soiling, dust, old age toning, dents, paint loss and rust could be present along with other minor wear consistent with age. Please view all the photos as the are intended to be part of the description and ask any questions you may have prior to bidding. I’m always willing to take additional photos or answered detailed questions. **Over the next several months we will be listing many items fresh from a local estate. Most will be run as auctions, so stay tuned for Sunday new listings. If you are interested in an item bid early as people often forget and miss out on items. I will not end listings early for any reason so please do not ask. The volume of items is too many to list but overall the areas covered are vintage toys, banks, games, advertising related items, tins, dolls and other collectibles.***
