Description: This vintage teacher resource book is adorable! It is in excellent condition, considering how long I have had it! I used these reproducible books in my kindergarten classroom, and my students loved them! They really enjoyed coloring them and reading them. This item is clean and comes from a smoke free home. This book was written by Christine E. McCormick and Jana M. Mason and illustrated by Deborah K. Reich. The copyright is 1998, and the publisher is Good Year Books. This resource book was developed by leading reading and child development researchers and has been extensively tested with children! The 26 Little Books reinforce phonics and early reading skills. "Little Books From A to Z" contains 26 reproducible, easy-to-recite, high-interest Little Books for children who are learning to recognize letters and connect the letters with their primary sounds at the beginning of words. Each book fosters awareness of initial sounds by emphasizing a specific letter. The 5-page Little Books, one for each letter of the alphabet, provide easy-to-remember text with child-friendly supporting illustrations. Children will enjoy reading the Little Books over and over again as they delight in their success at the first steps toward learning to read. Letter recognition and the phonemic awareness skill of connecting printed letters with their sounds (ex. the words "mile" and "mop" begin with the same /m/ sound, and the letter "m" represents that sound) are widely recognized as important predictors of individual differences in learning to read. "Little Books From A to Z" encourages success with these skills. Within this teacher resource book are 26 Little Books, one for each letter of the alphabet. There are a few words of text on each page with an illustration that clearly depicts the text. The simplicity of the text allows children to recite it after an introduction and model reading by a teacher or parent. "Little Books From A to Z" is intended to supplement other class activities for the letters and may be used in any order. The Little Books are intended to be introduced during letter instruction and then given to each child to keep and use at home. The last page of each book says, "I read my Little Book to:" and has 3 lines for signatures. Many easy books on the market emphasize a holistic approach to the early stages of reading. However, "Little Books From A to Z" helps children to begin to realize the link between a letter and its sound(s) and fosters skills closely related to systematic reading instruction. For example, each Little Book emphasizes a specific letter sound at the beginning of words. Children are then encouraged to remember the specific words of the text for each book and develop awareness that most of the words in each Little Book begin with a specific letter. This book has a table of contents. At the beginning of the book is a section on "Procedures". Under that are the following subsections: Getting Ready for the Lessons, Preparing the Little Books in This Resource for Use, and Using the Books. Under "Using the Books" are the following subsections: Opening, Modeling and Tryouts, and Closing. This resource book also has a section on "Teacher Tips" that gives 6 ideas and a "Sample Parent Letter". This resource book would make a wonderful addition to a kindergarten or 1st grade classroom! It would also be great to have in a household with young children! I am hoping to find it a good home.
