Description: An interesting vintage set of seven square plate serving dishes. The dishes are hand molded square porcelain, white glazed with brown iron oxide imagery hand drawn on the surface. The unique and fanciful imagery depicts a distinctive bird, flowers, and landscape designs. The bird is a Japanese Phoenix, otherwise known as a Hou-ou Bird, Hoo-o Bird, or Fushicho Bird. It is the Japanese version of the Fenghuang, the Chinese Phoenix. Each dish is subtly unique displaying variations in the hand drawn imagery, and embodying the Mingei esthetic of Japanese studio pottery. The set of dishes comes with its original signed box. It is from my family's private collection. The age and region of origin are not precisely known. Buyer's notes on the box say they could be from the 1950s, though stylistic elements may indicate they are older. The designs have qualities that seem to correspond to Mino-ware or Seto-ware.They obviously have seen use, and were recently cleaned. Each dish is approximately 3 5/8" wide x 1" tall. This set of dishes would be at home in any collection of fine studio pottery, or a setting compatible with Asian design. The dishes vary in condition from excellent to good. All dishes have no cracks. A few have a very minor chip along the edge commensurate with use and age. One has a noticeable chip in one corner. Comes with original box.
