Description: Vintage female bullfighter doll from Portugal. Handmade leather pants and shoes, red satin cape, knit white shirt and brown felt jacket with a black felt collar, embroidered features, and reddish yarn hair. Bustline is articulated. This is a beautiful doll with intricate details and is in excellent condition. Firm, stuffed body with well-designed shoes so the doll stands easily on its own for display. Labels show "Hand Made in Portugal" with the number 52 on the back of the label. The gold label says "Mascotes Maria Helena." On the bottom of one shoe is printed "Espanha 52" and the other shoe says "Made in Portugal." In my research, I read that these dolls were made in the 1930's, 1950's and 1960's. Perhaps production was stopped during World War II. The doll is from my mother LaVerne Hammond's collection of dolls. Her notecard indicates she purchased it in 1986.
