The buttons are most likely stainless steel, because there is a little evidence of rust on the back where the hardware meets the button. The hardware is made of sterling silver, and is a screw back. These buttons are quite nice, at about 1/2 inch diameter. They are in EXCELLENT CONDITION! There are minimal scratches (and they're not visible unless you're right up close) and there is no denting or nicking of the metal. The screw back hardware works perfectly!
