Description: A tea set by Copeland Spode of England, in the popular Beverley pattern of russet and grey transfer ware featuring foliate designs and landscape vistas, including a tea pot with lid, a creamer [open], a sugar bowl with lid, six cups, six saucers, and 6 plates. Each piece is marked with characteristic markings of the firm on the underside. The set is in excellent condition consistent with age and wear. This tea set came from my wife’s grandfather’s estate. He was Charles Sanger Mellen (American, 1852-1927), President of the Northern Pacific Railway from 1897-1903 and the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad from 1903-1913. He worked with JP Morgan and was known as the “last of the railway czars”.
