Description: Vintage Cobalt Blue Glass Remember the Maine Navy Battleship Candy Trinket Dish This figural covered dish was made to commemorate the USS Maine naval ship, which sank in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. The USS Maine had been in Havana harbor for 3 weeks. It was there to protect American interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain. The explosion of the Maine on February 15th was a tragedy that killed 268 men which was 2/3 of the crew. It was believed to be caused by a mine and the Spanish were considered responsible. The sinking was a significant factor leading to the Spanish American War. This one is made of true cobalt blue glass. It is in VERY GOOD CONDITION ~ There are a few rough specks to be be felt along the edges, but appear to be small manufacturer flaws. There are also a couple spots of excess glass along the mold seams. It is free of any chips, nicks, repairs or damage. As is sometimes the case with these "Remember the Maine" covered dishes the ends of the lid turn up a bit and it does not fit tightly to the base. It measures approx. 3.5" H x 7" L x 2.75" W.
