Description: This sweet book is full of stories about a little girl who lives in an English village almost 100 years ago. It’s written for young ones, but it’s a chapter book. Its author is Joyce Lankester Brisley (1896-1978), a writer and illustrator who, with her sisters, attended evening classes at an art school as a young woman. All three sisters became artists and writers. Her first story about this little girl appeared in a magazine in 1925, and the first book, titled MILLY-MOLLY-MANDY, was published in 1928. Five more books followed. This is THE MILLY-MOLLY-MANDY STORY BOOK, containing tales from other volumes. The 21 stories are written with a language level a four- or five-year-old might enjoy listening to (maybe some three-year-olds). Millicent Margaret Amanda is the only child in a close-knit family with two parents, two grandparents, and an aunt and uncle. She is a resourceful little girl! The stories of village life couldn’t be called thrilling (no super-heroes!), but they have a happy way about them that makes you want to read them again. Be prepared to explain a few things (such as “What is a thatched roof?” “What are pence?” ”Why is a yard called a garden?”). The stories are easy to read aloud, just as if you were telling a bedtime story to your little ones. And the illustrations are charming. This copy is a reproduction, used but close to new. It’s an HCDJ published by Kingfisher Books. The DJ is in very good shape except for a place on the back where a price sticker used to be. Questions? Please e-mail before bidding.
