Description: Vintage 1956 Poster/Cartel Offset Lithograph DIVEDCO Modesta by Lorenzo Homar Prize Winner in the category of short dramas, of the 1956 Venice Film Festival Some of the people involved in the Film were Director: Benjamín DonigerActor: Antonia Hidalgor Recording engineer: José Raúl Ramírez Film editor: Paul Falkenberg Composer: Héctor Campos Parsi Singer: Ramito,The movie “Modesta” touches on the issue of domestic violence and women’s rights, starting with the tension between Modesta, the protagonist, and her husband over her responsibility to domestic duties. Modesta comes to lead a strike by the women in the town against their husbands who belittle and insult them by saying such things as “they are good for nothing” and “they are looking for excuses not to work”. She forms the “League of Liberated Women” which demanded men stop physically abusing their wives and start helping with domestic chores, including changing and washing baby diapers; a very progressive message in the 1950s (not only in Puerto Rico but nearly everywhere in the world). The poster depicts the disparate worlds of women and men, in and out of the home. The main figure of the poster, created in simple black lines against a white background, is a pregnant, female figure, obviously Modesta, who is dressed in a modest frock, standing at a doorway, with a haggard and forlorn look on her face. In a small frame at the left, as if a shadow or an old faded picture, is a man dressed in typical “jibaro” men’s clothes, obviously depicting Modesta’s husband, standing outside of the house, staring. The title of the film is in red, towards the top of the poster, on the left, touching Modesta’s hair. Under that is “ una pelicula…hecha en…Puerto Rico” in the three main colors used in the poster, mustard yellow, black, and red. On the bottom, under "Modesta", is “veala en…día…hora” in red, and lastly, along the bottom from left to right is the name of the sponsor, DIVEDCO, in small capitalized letters. The movie was another production by DIVEDCO, whose mission was to produce cultural materials for public education, predominantly for the rural communities in Puerto Rico. (If you go to themoviedb.org webpage, you can see the list of the 64 movies produced by DIVEDCO and their main theme and purpose. The diversity of topics is so relevant, critical, and impressive, especially, in my view, for a government agency.) The other important DIVEDCO mission was to provide Puerto Rico’s local talent, be it, scriptwriters, movie directors, musicians, singers, song-writers, actors, movie crews, etc. and “The Generation of the 50’s” artists (whose works, like this poster, are coveted and collected today), a creative forum which funded their talents, promoted their work, and helped them become (more) well known. The buyer of this poster gets 2 “GREATS”: A piece of art by Lorenzo Homar and the movie, produced by DIVIDCO, which won the 1956 Venice Film Festival award for best short drama.
