Description: This is a very rare WW1 Baume & Co Trench Watch, made of .925 silver and was a presentation watch for military officers. It is inscribed with initials and “The Somme 1916”. This is one of the deadliest battles in WW1. It features a white dial and a brown leather strap. The movement is mechanical (manual) and the year of manufacture is pre-1920. This vintage watch is from the Swiss brand Baume (Longines) and has a half hunter caseback. The watch is working not tested for accuracy. The dial shows wear. The band is not original only one I could find to fit. Please view photos for more details and conditions. The watch is displayed in an analogue style and has a military theme. It is perfect for collectors and enthusiasts of vintage watches. Please note that this item does not come with original box/packaging or papers. Battle of the Somme, (July 1–Nov. 13, 1916) Allied offensive in World War I. British and French forces launched a frontal attack against an entrenched German army north of the Somme River in France. A weeklong artillery bombardment was followed by a British infantry assault on the still-impregnable German positions. The battle ended on November 18th 1916, with well over one million casualties and 300,000 fatalities. Although casualties were high for all sides, the battle is most prominently remembered in Britain and the Commonwealth as an example of the ultimate sacrifice made by the men who served throughout the First World War. Baume & Co acted as the London agents for Longines from 1976 to the mid 1960s. Arthuer Baume was even listed as an owner and director of Longines in April of 1915. Longines watches in the British market pre 1927 didn’t have the Longines name on the dial or the movement. This was a quirk of British retailers which would refuse to stock watches with another name on. Baume and Longines were proud of their watches, but needed to be pragmatic and sell within the British market. *Based on the Hallmarks this watch was determined to be Baume.
