Description: The Caecilii Metelli were one of the most powerful families of the late Republic, from the decades before the First Punic War down to the time of Augustus. Denarius issued by Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio Nasica as Imperator in 47 or 46 BC, from traveling military mint in North Africa. On obverse, laureate head of Jupiter with beard and hair in ringlets. On reverse, an elephant, a frequent image on Roman coins to represent Africa Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio Nasica Silver denarius of Metellus Scipio 47 46 BCE Denarius of Metellus Scipio with elephant-skin headgear to represent African imperium (47-46 BC). Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio Nasica (c. 100/98 BC – 46 BC), in modern scholarship often as Metellus Scipio, was a Roman consul and military commander in the Late Republic. During the civil war between Julius Caesar and the senatorial faction led by Pompeius Magnus ("Pompey the Great"), he remained a staunch optimate. He led troops against Caesar's forces, mainly in the battles of Pharsalus and Thapsus, where he was defeated. He later committed suicide.
