Description: Attention collectors of modern art from the mid-century modernists. Arie Azene, born in Germany in 1934 was one of 19 "founder-artists" designated for support from the State of Israel. He is also the last survivor of the group. Arie Azene is also a personal friend of mine and gave me these two paintings in 2006 and they are both signed and also inscribed to me on the frame in the back "To Patti, Love Arie Azene". I have other provenance such as a series of emails to establish our friendship, which was begun because I interviewed Arie in Jerusalem and used stay with his neighbor, the artist Rutti Barkai. I know that few original paintings come available (because my understanding is they are few) from this period by Arie (who is now 90 years old) and I have never seen another of the modernist pieces available. Arie had a sold out exhibit at the Tel Aviv Art Museum in approximately 1980 and he told me this painting and another I have listed are from that show. It has his tag on the back saying, "1974", which was his pre-realism" era. My health calls for a downsizing and I wish to send this painting and hopefully it's partner (click on my name to see the other) to a collector who understands the value of this unique piece and it's place in Israel's cultural history. Questions? Let me know, please. Patti Links to info about Arie: "Born in Germany in 1934, Arie Azene immigrated to Israel at a young age and grew up in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Bezalel Acadamy in Jerusalem and the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv, before moving to Paris for advanced studies at the Grande Chaumiere. As Azene’s reputation and skill grew, he eventually joined the “New Horizons” group—a collection of artists that aimed to free Israeli painting from its local character and literary associations, and bring it into the sphere of contemporary European art. During this time Azene was heavily influenced by Yosef Zaritsky, the group’s dominant figure. But where Zaritsky was known as a “colorist”, Azene exhibits a clear inclination towards merging the color structure around two complimentary hues, usually close to one another. Preferring various combinations of gray, Azene constructs his structures in a two-dimensional way, similar to Zaritsky’s earliest abstract work. During his career as a Master artist he has exhibited in international shows, Museums and Galleries in Israel, Europe and the USA. Many of Azene's artworks can be found in important private collections." ~ from Qart.com
