Description: Very Rare 1948THONETMID-CENTURY INSTITUTIONAL BENTWOOD WRITING DESKVery rare Wood Veneer Top, Not Laminate VERY RARE - 1948 THONET - WRITING DESK - Rare Wood Veneer Top - NOT LAMINATE A very early version, very rare, 1948 Mid-Century Bentwood Writing Desk by Thonet, United States, c.1948. This is the earliest example of this Writing Desk I could find. This writing desk came out of an institutional building that was Architecturally designed for, and was commissioned to be completely furnished by Thonet in 1948. The really cool thing about this writing desk, and which makes it so rare, is that this was the original model and inspiration for the more popular ones that were produced a few years later that you see available that have a laminated top. This rare, early example has a true veneer wood top, I have not seen another one with a veneer top, except for the ones that were produced for this institution. This table was commissioned for the institution, from Thonet, as well as every piece of furniture in this particular building, more to come in the near future. This would look exceptional while displayed in a Mid-Century inspired interior. The rectangle veneer top offers a spacious writing area, accompanied by a single storage drawer which is nicely recessed inside of the top while closed. The drawer opens and closes as it should and is embellished the original brass rare "vertical" pull. The sides and back are finished in a wood veneer as well. Not sure of the veneer, but could be beech wood. The solid bent wood legs are nicely sculpted, showing Thonets iconic bentwood accenting. Condition and Markings:This Writing Desk was exceptionally well made, it’s both solid and sturdy without any wobble. The veneer top has no ink stains but, has a few minor water stains. The veneer is still well attached, to the top, sides and back. The unit is slightly darker in person, than in photos. There are a few very small minor chips, see photos. There is an ink strain in the very back of the drawer, that had seeped through to the inside back of the cabinet drawer compartment, inside only, and can only be seen if the drawer is removed, which can be a little tricky to remove. There are a couple of screws missing from the legs. This desk does not have the original Thonet label, but clearly is Thonet by design, and that fact that every single piece of furniture in this building is Thonet, more to come in the near future. It is however stamped on the bottom with E-509-5 and 809.
