BASIC VENUS FLYTRAP CARE GUIDE LOTS OF LIGHT- As much direct sunlight as possible; outdoors is ideal;can be grown indoors, but requires at least 4 hours of DIRECT SUNLIGHT (sunlight that shines onto a plant at full strength, with nothing getting between the sunlight and the plant), OR very intense artificial light, fluorescent or LEDs. Does not do well in terrariums; indoor growing requires lots of ventilation to prevent mold/fungus. ONLY RAIN WATER, DISTILLED WATER, OR REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER- Never use tap water, or any form of bottled water other than distilled. Some water dispenser stations in grocery stores have acceptable water filtered by reverse osmosis; but some just claim they do, and their water is still loaded with dissolved solids and other impurities that can damage Venus Flytrap roots. NEVER USE FERTILIZER- It can burn up the roots. They get all the fertilizer they need from insects. NEVER PLANT IN REGULAR SOILS- The best growing mediums are New Zealand Long Fibered Sphagnum Moss, Chilean Sphagnum Moss, or Peat Moss mixed with Perlite and/or Silica Sand. Make sure your Peat Moss and Perlite is fertilizer-free, as many companies add fertilizer. Cleaned, dust-free Perlite is preferred. WINTER DORMANCY IS REQUIRED to help rejuvenate the plant for the following Spring. Keeping the plant in conditions that are a little dryer, a little colder ( 30-60 degrees Fahrenheit ) , and shorter light period ( 8-10 hours a day )for 3-4 months is the general rule. If you live in temperate zones 8-10, dormancy will be a breeze. Otherwise, a cool basement or garage, that doesn't freeze too hard is ideal.
