USS Newport: this 204 foot Annapolis Class steam-powered, screw-propelled, gunboat, built in Bath, Maine, was commissioned October 5, 1897. She served in the Caribbean and Central American waters. She was credited with the capture of nine Spanish vessels. She was decommissioned in 1898 and recommissioned in 1900. She served as a training ship at the USNA. Later, as a training ship in several East Coast cities, and finally as the City of Aberdeen, WA training ship starting in 1931.
