Not, of course, allowed on the uniform, but worn on all manner of off-duty civilian caps and clothing as novelty items. Fourth Marines has a rich and colorful history since its activation in 1914. They were known as China Marines for their service in Shanghai 1927-1941. The regiment has distinguished list of battle streamers from WWII as well as Viet Nam 1965-1969. In Operation Desert Storm the 4th Marines HQ led Regimental Combat Team 4 – better known as Task Force Grizzly! Their headquarters is part of the Okinawa-based 3rd Marine Division, but in recent years this unit’s battalions have been assigned to I MEF in California. Recent Decades: Of course, Marines of 4th Regiment made history once again in hard-fought battles of Operation Iraqi Freedom! Each of the three battalions participated in OIF, including the initial invasion and subsequent deployments.
