Description: United States (U.S.) Model 1860 (M-1860) Staff and Field Officer sword. Dark blue or black leather type covered wood core grip. Grip with triple wire wrap. Single guard with a very small tab on other side. Eagle Patriotic scene with banners on the fixed guard portion. Blade is not marker marked that I could find. Blade is double engraved. Engraving has patriotic eagle on one side and “U.S.” with other patriotic motif on the other side. Blade length approximately 29 1/2 inches. Steel based, nickel-plated three ring scabbard with much wear, also, missing one screw on lower scabbard brass drag. Most likely late 1800s. Overall, very worn condition. Additional Notes: Typically, the 1860 Staff and Field Officer’s sword was more a badge of rank than a weapon. In 1872 the M-1860 sword was expanded for use by all Army officers except medical officers, paymasters, and mounted officers. The Model 1860 Staff and Field officer sword was eventually replaced by the Model 1902 Officers Saber.
