Description: Offered for auction here is the booklet entitled "Normandy". Allied forces landed on the Normandy, France beaches on June 6, 1944, in the beginning of a massive land and sea effort to rid France and northern Europe of the German occupiers. Over 5,000 ships carried and supported some 100,000 fighting men that day on the invasion. This booklet chronicles in detail the Battle of Normandy. The Allies had fooled the German leadership into believing that the invasion would occur further to the east, near the Port of Calais, which was the closest land to England. While Normandy was strongly defended, Germany did not commit adequate forces or reserves to this battle, and the Allies secured a beachhead, aided by paratroopers who jumped behind enemy lines. While Normandy was strongly defended, Germany did not commit adequate forces or reserves to this battle, and the Allies secured a beachhead, aided by paratroopers who jumped behind enemy lines. Termed "Operation Overlord", the Allied invasion was the largest such sea-based landing in military history. Casualties were high on both sides, with Allied forces landing at one beach, Omaha Beach, suffering the worse losses. The Normandy invasion was the basis for the advancement of Allied forces into central and eastern France in the coming weeks, ultimately providing a base from which to continue the battle into Belgium, the Netherlands and into Germany. This booklet has some great military maps, to include (a) the Operation Overlord Area of northern France, (b) the final Overlord plan, showing beaches invaded by the various Allied armies, (c) the Bocage Country in July 1944 (a well-wooded area in western France with fields often marked by hedgerows), and (d) the area occupied by the First Army in July 1944, noting the front lines. This publication, which contains 46 pages, is in excellent, virtual mint, condition. There are no rips or tears, no writing or markings, no spills or smears, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place. Pictures sell!
