Robert McClelland (August 1, 1807 " August 30, 1880) was a prominent American politician who held several significant positions, including U.S. Representative from Michigan, the ninth governor of Michigan, and United States Secretary of the Interior. He was admitted to the Michigan bar and established a prosperous law practice in Monroe, participating in the constitutional convention of 1835. Following Michigan's admission to the Union, Governor Stevens T. Mason offered him the roles of state Bank Commissioner and state Attorney General, both of which he declined to focus on his private practice, while remaining actively involved in the Democratic Party of the new state. In 1836, McClelland wed Sarah Elizabeth Sabine, with whom he fathered six children. In 1837, McClelland was appointed to the board of regents of the University of Michigan, returning to this role in 1850. He represented Monroe County in the Michigan House of Representatives in 1838 and 1840, serving as speaker of the house in 1843. He was elected mayor of Monroe in 1841. In 1842, he was elected as U.S. Representative for Michigan's 1st congressional district, serving from 1843 to 1849 during the 28th, 29th, and 30th congresses. Contrary to the prevailing views of the Democratic Party, he was a staunch supporter of the Wilmot Proviso, which aimed to limit the expansion of slavery into new states. Additionally, he actively backed his friend Lewis Cass in his unsuccessful presidential campaign in 1848 and chose not to seek reelection that year. Item ordered may not be exact piece shown.
