Description: From the old county courthouse in Helena Montana. The room was once the judges chambers. They updated some interior doors to fire rated sometime back in the 90s and the daughter of the judge asked for the door as it had her father's name on the glass. She remembers the door had the dollars on it when she was little back in the early 1960s. So the set was made for the judges chambers sometime between 1921 and 1960. No records exist online of a hardware set produced with silver dollars in the face. You could tell the knobs had been regularly removed and the door painted over and over again through the years with the plates left on. The knobs had little or no paint on them and a great patina so was nice they were left alone. As for the lock, I assumed because it was the judges chamber the need for a secure lock as seen in the photo was probably essential for privacy and security. There is no key but this lock cylinder can be easily keyed at your local locksmith. I feel the modification was done sometime around 1940 at the beginning of the judges career. The lockset probably is from an earlier date of the county courthouse dates to the 1890s or was added when securing the room required a more sophisticated lock set. The weight of the knobs is one really crazy part. 20 plus ounces each, like holding a small cannon ball.If I could narrow down the date of the lock I could get a closer date to when the coins were probably added, but I feel 1940 is a reasonable date for it all.The hardware was professionally restored by Rustynail Restorations of Helena.
