THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR TRUE MODERNISM FANS AND COLLECTORS AS THIS BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED ART POSTERS BOOK IS LONG OUT OF PRINT AND VERY SCARCE TO FIND. THE VENERABLE FAMOUS PRINTING HOUSE OF IMPRIMERIE MOURLOT PARIS WAS FOUNDED IN 1852 BY THE MOURLOT FAMILY. IT IS KNOWN WORLDWIDE FOR ITS FINE ART LITHOGRAPHY PRINTING, AND ONE OF THEIR MOST IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS WAS TO BE THE ART POSTER. MOURLOT BECAME THE PLACE WHERE POSTERS WERE PREPARED AND PRODUCED AS WORKS OF ART IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. BEGINNING IN THE 1930'S FERNAND MOURLOT INVITED THE MAJOR ARTISTS OF THE TIME INTO THE LITHOGRAPHY STUDIO TO LEARN THE MEDIUM OF PRINTING TOGETHER. ENCOURAGING THE ARTISTS TO WORK DIRECTLY ON THE LITHOGRAPHY PLATES TO CREATE ORIGINAL PRINTS AND POSTERS IN LIMITED EDITIONS. THE RESULTS OF THIS ARTISTIC COLLABORATION BETWEEN MASTER ARTISTS AND MOURLOT BECAME INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN FOR THEIR ORIGINALITY, BEAUTY, AND EXQUISITE CRAFTSMANSHIP. POSTERS HAVE ALWAYS EXISTED. BEFORE THE INVENTION OF LITHOGRAPHY, THEY WERE RARELY ILLUSTRATED ; AND COLOR LITHOGRAPHY MADE OUR MODERN CONCEPTION OF THE ART POSTER PRACTICABLE. WITH THE COMING OF AGE OF THE GREAT ART DEALERS OF THE EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY, ADVERTISING THE EXHIBITIONS OF CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS BECAME AN ART FORM IN ITSELF. AND THE SUBJECTS OF THESE EXHIBITS - PICASSO, CHAGALL, MATISSE, LEGER, DUFY, MIRO AND BRAQUE, TO NAME THOSE WHOSE WORK IS INCLUDED IN THIS VOLUME, BECAME THE CREATORS OF ANNOUNCING THEIR OPENINGS AND SHOWS. IT WAS NO ORDINARY COMMERCIAL TASK. IN EACH AND EVERY CASE, THE ARTIST BECOMES THE FINAL ARBITER OF COLOR, DESIGN, PROOF QUALITY AND FINAL PRINT. THE WORKS CONTAINED HEREIN WERE ALL PRINTED ORIGINALLY BY FERNAND MOURLOT, THE MASTER PRINTMAKER OF FRANCE AND OF THE PREEMINENT COLOR LITHOGRAPHER OF THE CENTURY. IT IS FROM HIS PRINTS THAT THE REPRODUCTIONS IN THIS BOOK HAVE BEEN TAKEN, WITH EVERY CARE TO REPRODUCE THE ORIGINAL COLOR AND TONAL VALUES. MR. MOURLOT ALSO HAS CONTRIBUTED AN ILLUMINATING INTRODUCTION ESSAY ON THE HISTORY OF LITHOGRAPHY AND ON HOW HE WORKED WITH EACH INDIVIDUAL ARTST. THE RARE OUT OF PRINT 1ST AMERICAN EDITION MODERNIST ART BOOK MEASURES 9 1/2" W X 12 5/8" H X 1" D, WITH 252 PAGES.
