Description: This is a POSTCARD from FIJI featuring TROPICAL CORAL Brightly Colored Street Market Coral reefs are some of the most colourful places in the world. The bright colors we see are only part of the story since many organisms do not see light the same way humans do. Some organisms only see limited parts of the light spectrum while others see far beyond visiblecolours into ultraviolet light that we cannot see. The bright colors serve many functions including camouflage, defence and mate attraction. Some corals increase the production of colourful protein pigments when they are exposed to more intense sunlight. Humans get a sun tan – corals become more colourful. We found the pink and purple proteins act as sunscreens for the corals by removing substantial light components that might otherwise become harmful to the algae hosted in their tissue. Corals rely on these light-dependent miniature plants, the so-called zooxanthellae, since they provide a substantial amount of food.
