Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION TO GET A TRUE UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THIS LOCO IS. For those who don’t know, TRIX makes 2-Rail DC locomotives and Marklin makes 3-Rail AC locomotives, so this loco will run on most US layouts. TRIX and Marklin names are sometimes used interchangeably making it confusing. This TRIX 22599 HO scale die-cast Union Pacific Big Boy #4013 steam locomotive comes with the original wooden box housed in a plain white cardboard box and then placed in a TRIX labeled cardboard box in VG condition with a fair amount of shelf wear. NOTE: The old black foam liner was starting to disintegrate. You can see black residue on the smoke stack area. I replaced the foam with some green foam. I tried to cut it to fit; but, you may want to adjust it to your liking. Also included is a 76 page owner’s manual and 14 page warranty booklet, both in multiple languages; a large parts diagram for both engine and tender with part numbers and names (in German only); and 2 bags of parts (including 2 cab figures) to be installed. I obtained the loco at a Collector/Hobbyist Estate Auction, so I don’t know its history. It is in EX looking condition; but, with so many detail parts and parts yet to be installed, it is hard to tell for sure. I do see 1 slightly bent metal hand rail on the top left side of the tender. You might be wondering how to install the 2 cab figures; well according to the parts diagram, the cab roof snaps in place and should pop off. FACTORY FEATURES Before Upgrade (Mainly from a May, 2006 review article in Modeltrainforum.com by Neil Wood): - DCC factory installed - Digital sound in DCC mode only w/ limited operator control - Directional front & rear LED lights - Cabin & marker LED lights - Die-cast frame, boiler, tender - Can motor w/ bell shaped armature & a flywheel - Close coupling ( I think it is permanent) - RP 25 wheel contours - Kadee type couplers - Boxpok wheels - 8 powered axles, center driving axles spring mounted - 25 wheel electrical pick-up - Coupler can be installed on front pilot - Steam lines swing out w/ cylinders - Metal handrails that are applied separately - Provisions for 2 smoke generators - Overall length: 18-5/16” - Weight 2 lbs. 10 oz. - Min. Radius 18”; but, 20” is recommended, overhang clearance is greater than most other brand Big Boys - MSRP = $798 in 2003 NOTE: The article reviewer rated this loco at a 9 ½ out of 10 with the original cost being his negative. He also stated “The ride is very smooth and with no noise….it glides silently around your layout. The detail is incredible and, unlike cheaper models, it (parts) is securely attached. This is a model that is built to last.” This loco was obviously built for DCC operation and I am not equipped to test DCC, only conventional DC on a short test track with no curves. I took this loco to my local Hobby Shop for DCC and Sound testing. The DCC checked out fine; but, there was no sound. A loco this fine deserves sound, so I had the Hobby Shop replace the sound system with a Soundtraxx Tsunami 2 Model TSU-2200 Digital Sound Decoder plus add a TCS 2002 KA1-P “Keep Alive”. The KA1-P will “supply power to decoders during times of power interruption due to dirty track or problematic track work. It will power an HO-scale locomotive with headlights on for approximately 2-5 seconds.” A new Soundtraxx speaker was also installed. Sounds only occur in DCC mode. Watch the video of performance after upgrade. The new LOCOMOTIVE ADDRESS IS 4013, per the Hobby Shop. A distinct advantage of the Tsunami 2 is that the sounds are individually controllable. In the TRIX system, “the whistle volume and sound length are preset. The bell volume is preset. Brake squealing is triggered by a change in motion.” Tsunami 2 is a great improvement. I will include all the literature/packaging I was given plus the old parts. UNPACKING NOTE: The loco is supposed to be anchored to a removable board in the bottom of the wooden box with 3 bolts. There are 3 holes in the board that match up to holes in the engine and tender. The bolts are missing and I can’t find replacements. They are slightly smaller than 6/32” threads.
