On the occasion of 2024's ICP Photobook Fest was announced a new fundraising edition with photographer Todd Hido, #2479-a, 1999 from his 1999 series House Hunting, one of his earliest experiments with photographing in the snow at night. They were delighted to work with Todd to translate this classic image into the Risograph printing space. The Riso process, partway between photocopying, screen printing, and traditional offset, accentuates the translation of a photograph into ink on paper in a tactile, unique way. “As somebody who prints my own photographs,” observes Hido, “I find it very interesting to use a different syntax to put a picture together. … I love how it affords me an opportunity to create something that’s ever so slightly different, but still related to what I originally made.”Risograph printing is a technique best described as a 'digital screen printing'. The process is similar to screen printing, but with the convenience of an office copier. It's known for its vivid colors (that other printers can't produce) and its specific textures. Risographs are printed using a machine similar to a photocopier where an image is scanned and duplicated. Like screen printing, this technique involves printing one color at a time from a master plate for each layer. Unlike screen printing, Riso is quick and easy to set up, reducing production costs. Favoring dramatic light conditions, Todd Hido portrays his subject matter when vivid evening skies or overcast weather conditions add a distinct sense of sentimentality. Employing a pictorial language that unfolds slowly picture by picture, the effect is astonishingly cinematic. Forlorn roads lose themselves in aimless terrains, while heavy clouds hover above. Barren fields and edges of dark pine forests underline the simplicity of the scenery, the emergence of occasional power lines or telephone poles serves as theatrical effect. An overall dark mood settles deep into the landscape, reinforced by the remnants of recent showers. Sometimes captured from the driver's seat through a rainy windshield, each work has a hint of the surreal. Drawn into this moody scenery, the viewer, alongside the artist, takes on the role of a lone traveler, who without map or compass is incited to contemplate what stretches endlessly ahead. While this Romantic concept of experiencing nature through the boundless emotional submission might lead one's associative thoughts as far back as the works of Caspar David Friedrich or members of the Hudson River School, Hido's process is unquestionably modern. Todd Hido’s photographs have been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, and most recently at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle, Switzerland. Other major institutions that have exhibited Hido’s work include the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Miami Art Museum, Florida; Netherland Architecture Institute, Rotterdam; Palazzo Ducale, Genova, Italy; Samsung Museum of Modern Art in Korea; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work was recently on view in the 49th edition of Les Recontres d’Arles, France. Work by Hido is held in public and private collections including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Smithsonian; and Fotomuseum Winterthur.
