Description: TNN Motorsports HardCore Heat (Sega Dreamcast, 1999) T24The first off-road racing game for the Dreamcast comes in the form of TNN Motorsports HardCore Heat. Players will be going around the world as they take part in a number of races throughout the three primary modes of play. Courses can be found in the United States, Egypt, Russia, Japan, France, and Peru. Modes of play include Championship, Time Attack, and VS. On the packaging of TNN Motorsports HardCore Heat it is stated that the game features five modes of play. However, the other two modes, Level Checker and Configuration, are not actual modes that allow players to race.
Championship mode is divided into three classes -- normal, hard, and expert. Class name represents the level of difficulty as well as the number of races that will be raced. Players will begin in normal class and must finish in the top three in points after the three races have been completed. The same pattern exists for the hard class but there are now four races. Expert class is the highest class and includes six races.
Throughout the Championship mode there will always be the same eight vehicles racing each other. Every vehicle has its own specific driver; the user will select to play as one of the eight featured drivers. While all of the vehicles are built for off-road, they vary is type and ability. Vehicles are a mix of trucks and dune buggies.
After each race in Championship mode players will be able to view their place of finish, race time, and points earned. At this time a replay is also available. Replays can be saved to a VMU and require 90 blocks each. Every time a class is completed the game will automatically be saved to the VMU; this requires 56 blocks for driver information and nine blocks for system information.
Time Attack mode allows users to race on any of the four initial tracks as well as any that have been unlocked in the Championship mode. Select a vehicle, course, and number of laps before racing. The objective here is to set the fastest lap times that you can.
VS mode is a single race alone, against an opponent with artificial intelligence, or against another player. Opponents with artificial intelligence can be the featured computer opponents or opponents provided with your saved data. Those provided with your saved data drive in the way they believe you would. The computer is able to do this by studying various parts of the saved data, such as how you take lines and how you accelerate. Level Checker mode is where players view how much a car has learned from their races. If enough was learned during Time Attack mode then the car's level can be raised.
Configuration mode is where all of the game and vehicle settings are adjusted. Options include: setting the camera angle for race starts, turning on/off the announcer, turning on/off the driver's voice, turning on/off the course map displayed during a race, turning on/off the character icons displayed during a race, and whether losing vehicles should be given more speed so that races remain close. Vehicles can be tuned, have stickers added to them, and be painted in this mode. Also in Configuration mode, course and lap records are available, profiles of the drivers can be read, and saved replays can be viewed.
