Description: "The Works of Hannah More, Volumes I and II, First Complete American Edition, by Hannah More. No Copyright data, as was common near two Centuries ago. Published by Harper & Brothers from their Cliff Street location in New York. First Edition, NOT Ex-Library. No ISBN - there were none in those years. Note - the photos you see are of this volume - no 'Stock Photos' - we never use them.A tight firm clean book in Acceptable condition in brown full leather-covered hard boards, 10 1/4" x 6 1/2" x 1,150 clean but lightly foxed - the amount of foxing varies from 'none' to 'medium - pages of remarkable essays, feminist aid, orphan's aid, anti-Slavery writings from a leading "Blue-Stocking" - and educated scholarly woman - of that day. Volume I is dated 1836 - we believe a Second Printing. Volume II is dated 1835 - we believe a First Printing. The illustrated, ornate Title Page (there were often two title pages in those years) is also dated 1835. The Preface is dated 1801 at Bath, in England. The Contents of Volume I include:Poems;Epitaphs;Ballads and Tales;Hymns;Bible Rhymes;Sacred Dramas;Stories for Persons of the Middle Ranks;Allegories;Tales;Strictures of the Modern System of Female Education;Practical Piety;Tragedies;Poems. The Contents of Volume II include:Hints for Forming the Character of a Young Princess;Christian Morals; An Essay on the Character and practical writings of St. Paul;Coelebs in Search of a Wife;Foreign Sketches;Domestic Sketches;Reflections on Prayer;Spirit of Prayer;Moriana, and Essays on Various Subjects.Included are splendid Anti-Slavery tales, Feminist literature, and writings to support the residents of the too-common Orphanages of the day. Hannah More was a remarkable person. A bookplate was cleanly removed, apparently a Century ago, from the front endpage. The Frontis page, bearing the 1786 portrait of the author, has come loose and was re-affixed, in the Civil War period fashion, by a straight pin. There is a name and "Ridgebury Academy, 1844" in manuscript on the first title page. There is no dust jacket. There is wear at the spine-ends and tiny pinheads of wearthrough at the leading corners. No mustiness, No looseness, No smoke smell. Just that one name, title page. No other markings, No bookplates, NOT Ex-Library, NOT Remainder-marked. We do try to describe them correctly - We want you back as a customer - hundreds of repeat customers. Splendid for the Historical reader, Girls' fiction collector, student, collector.
